Find the unit before entering the number
Food energy may be printed as kcal per kilogram, kcal per 100 grams or kcal per can or pouch. The calculator supports those formats. For package values it also needs the net package weight. Kilocalories are often called Calories on food labels; a grams-only serving line is not an energy density.
Choose an energy split
For mixed feeding, the wet-food percentage in this tool is a share of calories, not a share of grams or bowls. The remaining energy is assigned to the dry food. Deduct any already-budgeted extras first. The tool rejects extras that use the whole daily target, rather than inventing a suitable main-food allowance.
Convert, then measure
Energy assigned to each food divided by its kcal per gram gives grams per day. Dividing that amount by a chosen meal count gives an arithmetic per-meal split. These numbers may need rounding to what your scale or feeder can measure. Keep the daily total visible when making that adjustment.
Keep the care plan in charge
The tool cannot tell whether a target is appropriate, whether a food is nutritionally suitable, or why eating behavior has changed. It is a converter for a plan you already have. Ask your veterinary team about the target or a change in appetite rather than treating the output as a new prescription.
WSAVA: nutrition resources ↗ — Resources support an individualized nutrition plan with the veterinary team. Our calculator only converts a supplied target.
Equipment recommendations need model identification, dimensions, cleaning observations and documented use. Nutrition targets and clinical advice belong with a veterinary professional; this site does not diagnose symptoms.
