Cat equipment questions, answered
Practical answers, visible sources and a useful place to go next.
Do cats prefer small or large litter boxes?
A useful starting point is a box long enough for the cat to move comfortably. Feline veterinary guidance uses about 1.5 times the cat’s nose-to-tail-base length. Measure the usable inside, then consider entry height, location and individual mobility. Our length tool compares measurements; it does not diagnose why a cat avoids a box.
Can a litter box be too big?
Length alone does not settle suitability. A large box with an entry that is difficult to step over or an inaccessible location can still be unsuitable for the individual cat. Check the usable inside, access and placement together. A change in toileting behavior deserves veterinary attention rather than simply another purchase.
Is 2 cans of wet food enough for a cat?
A can is a package size, not a calorie target. Use the food’s stated calories per can and an individualized daily target from your veterinary team. Two 80-kcal cans provide 160 kcal; whether that is appropriate depends on the cat and the rest of its food. Our portion arithmetic converts a supplied target into quantities; it does not choose the target.
How much is one portion on an automatic cat feeder?
The meaning of “portion” is specific to the model and can vary with the kibble. Check the manual, dispense the actual food and weigh the amount. Record grams per dispensing setting and compare the measured total with the feeding plan. Do not assume a setting called “one portion” means one meal.
How much space does a cat need in a carrier?
Use the usable interior and the cat’s actual measurements, not the outside shell or weight label alone. Consider whether the cat can use the carrier comfortably and whether the door, ventilation and closure suit the journey. Ask the veterinary team about travel preparation and check the transport provider’s requirements separately.
How do I sanitize my cat water fountain?
Follow the exact model’s cleaning instructions, including the pump and any parts that cannot be submerged or heated. Disconnect power before dismantling. Cleaning and replacing a filter are separate tasks; a new filter does not clean residue from the reservoir or pump. Use only the cleaning method and products the equipment maker permits.
